Mappe-Monde dressee suivant les nouvelles relations et assujettie aux observations astronomiques. Corrigee et augmentee des decouvertes du Cap. Cook," was created by Gilles Robert de Vaugondy in 1785.

Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688-1766) was a prominent French cartographer and mapmaker who came from a family of renowned geographers and cartographers. He was born Gilles Robert, but he adopted the additional surname "de Vaugondy" when he married the daughter of the cartographer, Didier Robert de Vaugondy.

The map "Mappe-Monde dressee suivant les nouvelles relations et assujettie aux observations astronomiques" was a world map updated with the latest geographical knowledge and astronomical observations available at the time. It was also enriched with the discoveries made during Captain James Cook's voyages in the Pacific region.

Captain James Cook, an English explorer and navigator, undertook several significant voyages between 1768 and 1779, which led to the exploration and mapping of numerous Pacific islands and regions. His voyages greatly contributed to expanding European knowledge of the Pacific and its inhabitants.

By incorporating Cook's discoveries into his map, Gilles Robert de Vaugondy aimed to provide the most up-to-date and accurate representation of the world available during that period.

Gilles Robert de Vaugondy's father, Claude Denis, was a geographer and publisher, and his uncle, Jean-Baptiste, was a cartographer and geographer as well. When Gilles Robert de Vaugondy married his wife, he joined the family mapmaking business, which was already established and well-regarded.

Throughout his career, Gilles Robert de Vaugondy produced numerous maps and atlases. He was known for his attention to detail, accuracy, and artistic skill in mapmaking. He often engraved and printed his maps, incorporating the latest geographical knowledge and cartographic innovations of his time.

In 1757, Gilles Robert de Vaugondy published the "Atlas Universel," which became one of his most famous and influential works. This atlas included a comprehensive collection of maps that covered various regions of the world. The "Atlas Universel" was notable for its elegance, precision, and the high quality of its engravings.
