Gabriel Bodenehr’s view of Bologna (circa 1700) is a finely executed German Baroque city prospect that reflects the enduring European fascination with Italy’s historic urban centers at the turn of the 18th century. Produced by the Augsburg-based engraver and publisher Gabriel Bodenehr the Elder, the print belongs to a broader tradition of engraved city views intended for collectors, travelers, and armchair tourists seeking visual knowledge of renowned cities.

The composition presents Bologna from an elevated panoramic perspective, allowing the viewer to grasp both the city’s dense urban fabric and its surrounding plains. The extensive system of arcaded streets, a defining architectural feature of Bologna, is subtly suggested through the rhythmic repetition of building facades. The city’s medieval walls and gates frame the urban core, while roads and cultivated land extend outward into the countryside.

Dominating the skyline are Bologna’s principal landmarks, most notably the Asinelli and Garisenda Towers, which rise conspicuously above the surrounding roofs. Major churches, monasteries, and civic buildings—such as San Petronio and the university-related complexes—are clearly articulated, emphasizing Bologna’s dual identity as a religious center and one of Europe’s oldest university cities. The orderly layout conveys stability and intellectual prestige under Papal rule, which governed the city during this period.

Bodenehr’s engraving combines careful topographical observation with decorative Baroque flourishes. The foreground often includes animated figures, travelers, or staffage elements that lend scale and vitality to the scene. An ornamental title cartouche identifies the city, while the clean, balanced line work reflects the high technical standards of Augsburg printmaking.

As a late-17th- to early-18th-century depiction, Bodenehr’s Bologna provides a valuable visual record of the city before the transformations of the modern era, capturing its architectural character and cultural significance at a moment of continuity within Italy’s urban history.
