The 1901 map Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador; British, Dutch, and French Guiana is a striking example of early twentieth-century cartographic publishing by the American mapmaker George Franklin Cram (1842–1928), whose firm was renowned for producing widely distributed and affordable atlases in the United States. Cram’s maps from this period combined geographic detail with clear political boundaries, reflecting both the increasing standardization of mapmaking and the commercial appeal of beautifully colored prints designed for atlases and reference works.
This particular sheet, originally included in a Cram atlas published in 1901, covers the northern portion of South America from the Caribbean coast inland to the Andean foothills, including the newly independent republics of Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador, as well as the colonial territories of British Guiana, Dutch Guiana (Suriname), and French Guiana. The map situates cities, rivers, and frontier lines with a precision and clarity typical of Cram’s work, and often includes an inset showing the Galapagos Islands to complete the regional picture.
The political context of the era is implicitly present in the delineation of boundaries. At the turn of the twentieth century, tensions over border disputes—such as those between Venezuela and British Guiana—were prominent in diplomatic circles, and maps played a role in how governments and the public perceived territorial claims. Although the Paris Arbitral Award of 1899 had formally defined much of the boundary between Venezuela and British Guiana, issues surrounding those borders remained contentious into the twentieth century
