The Pictorial Economic Map of Alicante and Murcia, Spain, published in 1960, is a vibrant and visually engaging representation of two of Spain’s historically rich and economically significant regions. Created during a period of economic recovery and growth in post-war Spain, the map blends geographical detail with colorful illustrations, celebrating the economic activities, natural resources, and cultural highlights of Alicante and Murcia.
The map’s design focuses on the unique features of these neighboring regions in southeastern Spain. The coastal areas of Alicante, part of the Costa Blanca, are prominently depicted, highlighting their importance for agriculture, fishing, and the burgeoning tourism industry. Inland, the fertile plains of Murcia, known as the Huerta de Europa (the Orchard of Europe), are illustrated with symbols of agricultural abundance, including crops like oranges, lemons, grapes, olives, and tomatoes. These images reflect the region's role as a major producer of fruits and vegetables for domestic and international markets.
Economically significant industries are illustrated through lively pictorial symbols scattered across the map. Fishing boats along the Mediterranean coastline emphasize the fishing industry’s contribution to local livelihoods, while industrial symbols such as factories and mines mark areas of mineral extraction and manufacturing. Additionally, vineyards and wine barrels highlight the region’s historic wine production, particularly in areas like Jumilla and Yecla.
The map is not only functional but also artistic, featuring decorative elements like ornate borders, compass roses, and stylized lettering. Small illustrations of landmarks, such as castles, churches, and traditional villages, add cultural charm, emphasizing the region’s architectural heritage and rural beauty. Coastal resorts and beaches, increasingly popular in the 1960s, are marked to attract tourism.
The Pictorial Economic Map of Alicante and Murcia reflects the optimism and economic aspirations of Spain in the mid-20th century. It served as both a promotional tool and a celebration of the region’s resources and culture, combining functionality with a distinct artistic flair. Today, it remains a fascinating artifact, valued by collectors and historians for its depiction of the economic landscape and its unique cartographic style.
