Wines of the Côtes du Rhône (Les Vignobles de France – Vins des Côtes du Rhône), published in 1965, is a vibrant and stylized wine map celebrating one of France’s most historic and diverse wine regions. Part of the Les Vignobles de France series, this map reflects mid-20th-century enthusiasm for regional identity, terroir, and the growing international appeal of French wine culture.
Rendered with a blend of cartographic clarity and artistic charm, Dutter’s map highlights the Côtes du Rhône appellation, stretching along the Rhône River valley in southeastern France. The region is divided into the Northern and Southern Rhône, each with distinct climates, grape varieties, and wine styles. The map showcases renowned crus and villages such as Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, and Vacqueyras, all illustrated in an accessible, almost storybook style.
Dutter’s work blends informative geography with whimsical artistry. Vineyards are indicated with delicate clusters of grapes, while charming illustrations of winegrowers, barrels, and bottles enliven the landscape. Rolling hills, châteaux, and river bends are stylized to evoke the romance of the Rhône Valley, making the map not just a guide but a celebration of viticulture.
Text elements, decorative borders, and regional coats of arms add historical and cultural context. It is not a technical wine map but rather an inviting visual narrative meant to educate and enchant, aimed at wine lovers, collectors, and tourists discovering the richness of French wine.
