This historic Bordeaux Right Bank wine map from 1901 illustrates one of the most celebrated viticultural landscapes in southwestern France. The Right Bank refers to the vineyard territories located on the eastern side of the Dordogne River, opposite the Médoc and Graves regions. Known for its clay and limestone soils, this area produces some of the most elegant and expressive wines of the Bordeaux appellation.
At the heart of the map lies the renowned village of Saint-Émilion, a historic center of wine production whose vineyards stretch across rolling limestone hills and terraces. The area surrounding Saint-Émilion has been cultivated for centuries, and the vineyards here are among the oldest continuously planted in the Bordeaux region. Numerous estates and small vineyard parcels appear across the terrain, illustrating the dense network of wine properties that define this prestigious district.
Nearby, the celebrated appellation of Pomerol is also represented, famous for its rich Merlot-based wines grown on clay-dominated soils. Although smaller than neighboring regions, Pomerol has achieved global recognition for producing some of Bordeaux’s most sought-after wines. Surrounding communes such as Lalande-de-Pomerol, Fronsac, and Lussac-Saint-Émilion further expand the intricate vineyard landscape shown on the map.
The composition carefully records roads, railway lines, rivers, and village boundaries, emphasizing the close relationship between geography, transportation, and the wine trade at the beginning of the twentieth century. Gentle shading indicates forests and cultivated land, while precise typography identifies numerous estates and rural settlements scattered throughout the countryside.
Beyond its practical value, this 1901 map captures the structure of the Bordeaux Right Bank during a formative period in the development of modern appellations. Today it stands as both a historical document and a visually appealing artifact, reflecting the deep cultural heritage of Bordeaux winemaking and the enduring prestige of the vineyards along the Dordogne valley.
