This elegant late-19th-century wine map of Champagne, titled Carte Vinicole de la Champagne (1891), presents a detailed and decorative view of the vineyards surrounding the historic town of Épernay—one of the most important centers of the Champagne trade. Created during a period when the prestige of Champagne was rapidly expanding worldwide, the map combines cartographic precision with ornamental artistry typical of French wine atlases of the era.

The composition highlights the fertile valley of the Marne River, which winds across the landscape and shapes the distribution of vineyards. Surrounding towns and villages such as Hautvillers, Cumières, Ay-Champagne, and Avize are carefully marked, reflecting their historic roles in the production of high-quality grapes used in Champagne wines. Many of these villages are now recognized among the region’s celebrated crus.

The map distinguishes vineyard areas with soft color shading, allowing viewers to visualize the concentration of wine-growing land across the rolling hills of the Montagne de Reims and the renowned Côte des Blancs. These slopes, with their chalky soils and favorable sun exposure, form the agricultural foundation of the sparkling wines that made Champagne famous.

Decoratively, the map is framed by an ornate border and crowned by a heraldic emblem, reflecting the pride and heritage associated with Champagne’s viticultural landscape. On the left side, an elaborate cartouche bearing the title Carte Vinicole de la Champagne reinforces the document’s purpose as both a scientific reference and an artistic presentation piece.

Originally produced as a photographic reproduction of a large wall map displayed in Épernay, this chart served merchants, producers, and wine enthusiasts seeking a clearer understanding of vineyard geography. Today it offers collectors and historians a fascinating glimpse into the structure of the Champagne wine region at the end of the nineteenth century.

Both informative and visually refined, this vintage wine map captures the enduring legacy of Champagne’s vineyards and the cultural importance of the region’s celebrated sparkling wine tradition.
