The Map of the Isle of Wight, created by the celebrated English cartographer John Speed (1552–1629) and first published in 1627, is a remarkable example of early 17th-century English cartography and decorative engraving. Drawn from local surveys and historical sources, it was originally included in Speed’s monumental work, The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine—the most influential atlas of England and Wales ever produced.
The map depicts the Isle of Wight, located off England’s southern coast, with extraordinary detail for its time. Its towns, villages, estates, and natural features are carefully labeled, from Newport, the island’s historic center, to coastal settlements such as Cowes, Yarmouth, and Sandown. The surrounding waters of the Solent are filled with ships and sea monsters—hallmarks of Speed’s distinctive style that combine geographical accuracy with imaginative artistry.
Inset in the design are illustrations of Carisbrooke Castle and Newport, providing visual context and emphasizing the island’s strategic and cultural significance. The decorative title cartouche, heraldic coats of arms, and elaborate compass rose exemplify the Baroque elegance and symbolic richness that define Speed’s maps.
At the time of its creation, the Isle of Wight was of great maritime importance, serving both as a naval stronghold and a picturesque retreat. Speed’s map reflects this dual identity—part fortress, part pastoral landscape—and remains one of the earliest comprehensive depictions of the island.
Today, John Speed’s Wight Island (1627) endures as a masterpiece of English mapmaking, uniting geography, history, and art. It stands not only as a record of place but as a testament to the vision and craftsmanship that shaped the cartographic heritage of early modern Britain.
