Neomagum (Nijmegen, Nummegen) is a remarkable seventeenth-century city view created by the renowned Swiss-German engraver and publisher Matthäus Merian. Published in 1636, the engraving depicts the historic city of Nijmegen, one of the oldest urban settlements in the Low Countries. Produced as part of Merian’s celebrated topographical works, the image combines geographic accuracy with artistic refinement, providing a valuable record of the city during the Dutch Golden Age.
The composition presents Nijmegen from an elevated panoramic perspective overlooking the Waal River, the principal branch of the Rhine flowing through the region. This strategic river location had made the city an important military, commercial, and administrative center since Roman times. Merian carefully renders the city’s defensive walls, gates, towers, churches, streets, and densely arranged buildings, emphasizing its importance within the Dutch Republic.
The title “Neomagum” refers to the city’s Roman origins. Nijmegen traces its history to the Roman settlement of Ulpia Noviomagus Batavorum, one of the earliest urban centers established in what is now the Netherlands. Merian’s engraving therefore captures a city whose heritage extended across more than fifteen centuries of European history.
Particular attention is given to the city’s fortifications and elevated position above the river. The surrounding landscape, including roads, agricultural fields, and nearby settlements, provides context for the region’s economic activity and strategic significance. Ships visible on the river underscore Nijmegen’s role in trade and transportation during the seventeenth century.
Like many of Merian’s city views, the engraving balances documentary precision with visual elegance. Fine linework, detailed architectural rendering, and a carefully structured composition transform the panorama into both a historical document and a work of art.
