Ancient map of Russiae, Moscow, Tartaria, 1570
The map was created by Abraham Ortelius in 1562. Abraham Ortelius was a renowned Flemish cartographer and geographer known for his significant contributions to the field of cartography during the 16th century. The map titled "Russiae, Moscoviae et Tartariae Descriptio," was part of his notable work, "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" (Theatre of the World), which is considered one of the earliest modern atlases.
This map provided a detailed depiction of Russia, Muscovy, and Tartary in the 16th century. It was dedicated to Henry Sidney, who was the president of Wales (Wallie presidi) at the time. The dedication was a common practice in cartography during that era, where maps were often dedicated to influential individuals or patrons who supported the creation and dissemination of such maps.
Ortelius was a pioneer in the field of cartography, as he didn't just create his own maps but also critically evaluated and compiled maps from various sources, including those of other cartographers. His work helped standardize mapmaking and improved the accuracy of geographical representations.
Ortelius was known for dedicating his maps and atlases to various patrons and influential individuals. This practice helped secure financial support for his work and also served as a way to express gratitude to those who supported him.
Abraham Ortelius's contributions to cartography had a lasting impact, and his maps and atlases continued to be reprinted and updated well after his death. His work laid the foundation for the development of modern cartography.
In addition to "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum," Ortelius produced various other maps and works, including maps of specific regions and cities. His catalog of maps covered not only Europe but also parts of Asia, Africa, and the Americas.
