Matthäus Merian’s Strassburg (1643) is among the most striking engravings from his celebrated Topographia Alsatiae series, part of the broader Topographia Germaniae project that sought to document the cities and landscapes of the Holy Roman Empire. Executed with remarkable precision and a characteristic aerial viewpoint, the print offers a sweeping panorama of Strasbourg—then a prosperous Free Imperial City on the Rhine, renowned for its commerce, architecture, and intellectual life.

The engraving depicts Strasbourg enclosed by formidable fortifications and a network of waterways, emphasizing its strategic position on the Rhine River. At the heart of the city rises the monumental Cathedral of Our Lady (Münster zu Straßburg), its soaring Gothic spire dominating the skyline and symbolizing both civic pride and spiritual authority. Merian’s meticulous rendering captures the dense pattern of medieval streets, half-timbered houses, and public squares that radiate outward from the cathedral, while the surrounding countryside reveals vineyards, farms, and the distant Vosges Mountains.

Merian’s composition is not merely topographical but deeply expressive of the Baroque fascination with order and grandeur. The title cartouche—often embellished with allegorical figures, coats of arms, or scrollwork—anchors the scene with aesthetic flourish, while the accompanying key identifies major civic and religious buildings, bridges, and gates.

Produced during the later years of the Thirty Years’ War, Strassburg reflects both the endurance and vulnerability of an important European city situated between German and French spheres of influence. Merian’s engraving preserves Strasbourg as it appeared before the significant political and architectural transformations that followed its annexation by France in 1681.
