"Nova totius terrarum orbis geographica ac hydrographica tabula" is a Latin phrase that translates to "New geographical and hydrographic map of the whole world." It suggests the existence of a map that provides a comprehensive depiction of the Earth's geography and hydrography.

Historically, such maps were created during the Age of Exploration when European explorers and cartographers sought to chart the unexplored parts of the world. These maps aimed to capture the known and unknown territories, coastlines, rivers, mountains, and other geographical features, as well as the details of oceans, seas, and bodies of water.

While there have been numerous historical maps that claimed to represent the "whole world" during different periods, it's important to note that the understanding of the Earth's geography has evolved over time. Modern maps, aided by advanced technology and satellite imagery, provide more accurate and detailed representations of the Earth's surface.

Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571-1638) was a Dutch cartographer, astronomer, and publisher. He is best known for his exceptional contributions to mapmaking during the Golden Age of Dutch cartography.

Blaeu was born in Alkmaar, the Netherlands, and trained as a lawyer before shifting his focus to cartography. In 1599, he joined the Amsterdam-based publishing house of his father-in-law, Jodocus Hondius, which specialized in maps and atlases. Blaeu quickly developed his skills as a map engraver and became renowned for his craftsmanship and attention to detail.

In 1604, Blaeu established his own cartographic firm in Amsterdam, known as the Blaeu Publishing House. Under his leadership, the publishing house produced numerous influential maps and atlases. One of his most famous works is the "Atlas Novus" (1635), which was published in multiple volumes and became one of the most comprehensive atlases of the time.

He employed skilled engravers and talented artists to create aesthetically pleasing maps with intricate decorations, such as elaborate cartouches, sea monsters, and ships.

Notably, Blaeu was appointed as the official cartographer of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), which gave him access to valuable navigational data from Dutch explorers and traders. This privileged position allowed him to incorporate the latest geographic knowledge into his maps.

Willem Janszoon Blaeu's contributions to cartography significantly advanced the field, and his maps played a crucial role in disseminating geographic knowledge during the 17th century. His work had a lasting impact on the development of mapmaking and set a high standard for cartographic craftsmanship.
