Johann Baptist Homann’s Hamburg City Plan and View, published around 1720, is a striking eighteenth-century depiction of Hamburg, one of the most important commercial and maritime cities of northern Europe. Combining a detailed urban plan with an elevated panoramic view, the work provides both a practical representation of the city and an impressive portrait of Hamburg during the early modern period.

Situated on the Elbe River near its junction with the North Sea, Hamburg had developed into a major center of international commerce. Its strategic position gave merchants access to the North Sea and the extensive network of European inland waterways. By the early eighteenth century, Hamburg was a prosperous independent city within the Holy Roman Empire and an important member of the Hanseatic tradition of northern European trade.

Homann's plan records the city's intricate network of streets, canals, fortifications, churches, public buildings, and harbor facilities. The surrounding waterways are particularly significant, illustrating the close relationship between Hamburg's urban development and its maritime economy. Ships and river traffic emphasize the city's role as a major gateway for goods arriving from and departing toward Britain, Scandinavia, the Netherlands, and other parts of Europe.

The accompanying city view provides a more pictorial interpretation of Hamburg's architecture and setting. The skyline is punctuated by numerous church towers and civic structures, while the fortified perimeter demonstrates the continuing strategic importance of the city. The combination of plan and panorama allows the viewer to appreciate both the geographical organization of Hamburg and the architectural character of its early eighteenth-century streetscape.

Johann Baptist Homann was one of the leading German cartographers and publishers of his generation. Founded in Nuremberg, his publishing house became famous for producing finely engraved maps and city views characterized by careful geographical information, decorative cartouches, and sophisticated artistic presentation. His works were widely circulated throughout Europe and contributed significantly to the development of eighteenth-century German cartography.

This 1720 depiction is particularly valuable because it captures Hamburg before the extensive industrialization and urban expansion of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. For collectors of antique maps, German city views, maritime history, architecture, and European cartography, it offers an exceptional historical snapshot of Hamburg at the height of its early modern commercial importance.

Combining geographical accuracy, decorative elegance, and historical significance, Homann’s Hamburg City Plan and View is both a superb decorative print and an important visual document of one of northern Europe’s great trading cities.
