Issued in 1758 by the official French naval chart office, this Carte Réduite des Isles Antilles represents one of the most authoritative mid-eighteenth-century depictions of the Caribbean basin. Compiled under the direction of Jacques Nicolas Bellin, Hydrographer to the French Navy, the map reflects the strategic urgency of maritime knowledge during the height of colonial rivalry and the Seven Years’ War.
Designed as a reduced nautical chart, the composition emphasizes navigational clarity. Coastlines are crisply engraved, while shoals, reefs, soundings, and anchorages are meticulously indicated to guide naval and merchant vessels through the complex waters of the Antilles arc. The Lesser and Greater Antilles are rendered with disciplined linework, extending from Cuba and Hispaniola through Guadeloupe, Martinique, and southward toward Trinidad. Trade routes and prevailing wind patterns reinforce the map’s functional maritime purpose.
Unlike purely decorative cartography of the period, Bellin’s work is analytical and technical. The restrained cartouche and measured typography underscore its institutional origin at the Dépôt de la Marine, the central repository for France’s hydrographic intelligence. Precision, rather than ornament, defines its authority.
Beyond navigation, the map stands as a geopolitical document. It records European colonial possession across the Caribbean at a pivotal historical moment, illustrating the dense network of islands that shaped Atlantic commerce, sugar production, and imperial power.
