Curacao From The Dutch Originals of Gerard Van Keulen is a finely engraved eighteenth-century nautical chart depicting the Caribbean island of Curaçao, published in 1794 by the distinguished London mapmakers Richard Holmes Laurie and James Whittle. Based on original Dutch surveys by the renowned hydrographer Gerard van Keulen, the chart reflects the transfer of advanced Dutch maritime knowledge to British navigation during the great age of Atlantic commerce and naval expansion.
The map provides a detailed representation of Curaçao, one of the most strategically important islands in the southern Caribbean. Located just off the coast of present-day Venezuela, the island occupied a crucial position within the trading networks of the Dutch colonial empire. The chart carefully records coastlines, bays, anchorages, reefs, soundings, navigational hazards, and maritime approaches essential for safe navigation in regional waters.
Particular emphasis is placed on the natural harbor of Willemstad, whose protected anchorage helped transform the island into a major commercial center. Throughout the eighteenth century, Curaçao served as an important hub for shipping, trade, and transatlantic commerce, connecting European, Caribbean, North American, and South American markets.
The chart exemplifies the high standards of hydrographic cartography developed by the Van Keulen family, whose Amsterdam publishing house was among the most respected producers of sea charts in Europe. Laurie and Whittle adapted these Dutch sources for British navigators, reflecting the international exchange of geographic knowledge that characterized maritime science during the Enlightenment.
Visually, the engraving combines scientific precision with elegant decorative elements typical of late eighteenth-century cartography. Fine coastal delineation, carefully engraved lettering, and detailed hydrographic information create a chart that is both practical and aesthetically refined.
