The map is a meticulously crafted representation capturing the environs of Lhasa, a city steeped in the cultural tapestry of Tibet. This cartographic masterpiece was meticulously assembled in 1904 by none other than Laurence Austine Waddell, a distinguished figure with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Indian Medical Service. Waddell's dedication to unveiling the geographical intricacies of the region shines through in this detailed work.

This historical cartographic gem provides a vivid portrayal of the significant landmarks dotting the Lhasa landscape. Prominent among them are the iconic Potala Palace, a regal marvel perched amidst the city's splendor, the revered Jokhang Temple, and the serene Norbulingka Palace. Beyond the city's limits, the map gracefully encompasses the contour of the surrounding mountains, the meandering rivers, and the glistening lakes that harmoniously define the natural allure of this land.

A well-considered design divides the map into two distinct parts, each offering unique insights. The upper portion brings the city of Lhasa to life, while the lower section elegantly sprawls to reveal the captivating topography of the area beyond its borders. This segmentation enhances the map's usability, facilitating a nuanced exploration of both the urban heart and the expansive hinterlands.

In the annals of historical documentation, this map occupies a significant position. It offers a precious window into the Lhasa of yesteryears, preserving the essence of the early 20th century—a rare and invaluable glimpse of a time gone by. Its value extends beyond mere historical curiosity; it serves as an invaluable resource for those who seek to understand the profound history, vibrant culture, and the enchanting mystique of Tibet. A timeless artifact, this map stands as a bridge connecting the past to the present, inviting all who behold it to embark on a captivating journey through the captivating legacy of Lhasa and its surroundings.
