Pierre Mortier (1661-1711) stood as a distinguished Dutch publisher and engraver, renowned for his remarkable contributions to cartography. Among his notable accomplishments, he crafted the map titled "The Kingdom of Siam With its Tributary Kingdoms and the Isles of Sumatra, Andemaon," which saw publication in the year 1700.
This particular map offers a portrayal of the Kingdom of Siam, which corresponds to present-day Thailand in the late 17th century. It additionally encompasses the adjacent tributary kingdoms and the islands of Sumatra and Andaman. The map is rich with geographical particulars, including the intricate layout of cities, rivers, mountain ranges, and coastlines. Furthermore, it outlines political borders and divisions, thereby depicting the territorial makeup of the region.
Mortier's cartographic creation drew inspiration from the prior works of esteemed Dutch mapmakers, most notably the endeavors of Frederick de Wit and Nicolas Sanson. Mortier's maps were celebrated for their accuracy, alongside their embellishments that frequently featured intricate cartouches, ornate borders, and depictions of indigenous flora, fauna, and cultural elements.
