Pierre Mortier was a notable Dutch cartographer and publisher who lived during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He was born on July 26, 1661, in Leiden, Netherlands, and died on November 19, 1711, in Amsterdam.

"Mappe-Monde Dresse sur les Observations de Mrs. De L'Academie Royale des Sciences et quelques autres et sur les memories les plus recens" it's a world map created by Pierre Mortier in 1696. Pierre Mortier was a renowned Dutch cartographer and mapmaker who produced a variety of maps and atlases during the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

The map in question, "Mappe-Monde," is a world map that was based on the observations and information gathered by members of the Académie Royale des Sciences (Royal Academy of Sciences) and other reputable sources available at that time. It was typical for mapmakers of that era to draw upon the latest scientific data, exploration reports, and geographical knowledge to create updated and accurate maps.

In 1696, cartography was a rapidly evolving field, and new discoveries and explorations were continuously influencing the depiction of the world on maps. This particular map by Pierre Mortier would have reflected the best available knowledge of the world at that specific time.

Mortier inherited his publishing business from his father-in-law, Johannes Covens, and became one of the leading map and atlas makers of his time. He collaborated with other prominent cartographers and publishers, such as Nicolaes Visscher, to create and publish various maps, atlases, and geographical works.

One of his most significant works is the "Atlas Nouveau," a composite atlas first published in 1700 and later expanded in subsequent editions. This atlas contained a wide range of maps, including world maps, regional maps, and city plans, and was renowned for its accuracy and detailed cartography.

Pierre Mortier's maps were highly regarded for their craftsmanship and artistic quality, and his business became successful both in the Netherlands and abroad. He often updated and improved his maps based on new geographical information and exploration reports, making his publications valuable resources for scholars, travelers, and navigators of his time.
