"Carte Reduite Des Parties Connues Du Globe Terrestre Dressee au Depost des Cartes Plans et Journaux de la Marine" is a historical map created by Jacques Nicolas Bellin in 1755. Bellin was a French hydrographer and geographer who served as the official cartographer to the French Navy. He was renowned for his meticulous and accurate cartographic work during the 18th century.
The map in question, "Carte Reduite Des Parties Connues Du Globe Terrestre," translates to "Reduced Map of the Known Parts of the Terrestrial Globe." It was produced at the "Depot des Cartes, Plans et Journaux de la Marine," the official repository for nautical charts and maps used by the French Navy.
During this time, exploration and navigation were vital for the advancement of trade, colonization, and maritime dominance. Bellin's map would have been a crucial tool for sailors, navigators, and explorers as they charted their courses across the known regions of the Earth.
Bellin's expertise and skill in cartography caught the attention of the French Navy, and he eventually became the official cartographer to the French Ministry of the Navy, a position he held for over five decades. During his long career, Bellin produced a vast number of maps and charts, many of which were focused on maritime navigation and exploration.
One of his most significant works was the "Hydrographie Française," a five-volume atlas containing detailed and accurate maps of various regions around the world. These maps were widely used by French sailors and explorers.
Bellin's maps were characterized by their precision, attention to detail, and scientific accuracy. He often incorporated information from various sources, including explorers' reports and the latest survey data available, to create the most up-to-date and reliable maps of his time. His contributions were instrumental in advancing the knowledge of geography, especially in relation to the coastlines, islands, and oceans.
In addition to his work for the French Navy, Bellin also produced maps for private individuals and other institutions, and his cartographic expertise was highly sought after in the academic and intellectual circles of his era.
Today, Jacques Nicolas Bellin is remembered as one of the most prominent cartographers of the 18th century. His maps are valuable historical artifacts, providing a glimpse into the geographical understanding of the time and the level of exploration and knowledge available during the Age of Enlightenment.
