Antique map of the World on the Mercator Projection, 1860
Samuel Augustus Mitchell was an American geographer and publisher known for his cartographic works in the 19th century. One of his notable maps is the "Map of the World on the Mercator Projection, Exhibiting the American Continent as its Centre," published in 1860.
The Mercator Projection is a cylindrical map projection that preserves straight lines, making it useful for navigational purposes but distorting the size of land masses as they get farther from the equator. Mitchell's version, however, was unique as it centered the map on the American continent, with North and South America placed at the center, rather than the usual focus on Europe.
During this period, the United States was experiencing significant expansion and growth, and the concept of "Manifest Destiny" was prevalent, promoting the idea that the American nation had a divine right to expand across the continent. By placing the American continents at the center of the map, Mitchell's projection reinforced this notion and emphasized the importance of the Americas on a global scale.
It's important to note that mapmaking during the 19th century was influenced by geopolitical factors, nationalism, and imperial ambitions. As such, cartographers often produced maps that portrayed their own nation or region in a favorable light, sometimes at the expense of accuracy or fairness in depicting other parts of the world.
Mitchell initially worked as a teacher and banker before entering the publishing business. In 1829, he founded the S. Augustus Mitchell publishing company, which focused on producing maps, atlases, and geography textbooks. The company quickly gained prominence and became one of the leading map publishers in the United States.
Mitchell's cartographic works were widely acclaimed for their accuracy, clarity, and aesthetic appeal. He was known for incorporating up-to-date geographical information, including the latest explorations and discoveries, into his maps. Moreover, his maps often featured decorative borders, elaborate illustrations, and intricate details that made them visually appealing to the public.
Samuel Augustus Mitchell passed away on December 20, 1868, leaving behind a legacy of cartographic contributions that significantly influenced the development of geography and mapmaking in the United States.
