John Tallis's Railway map of Great Britain (1851) is a beautiful and detailed map of the British railway network in the mid-19th century. The map was published by John Tallis & Co., one of the leading map publishers of the time.
The map is divided into two sections: England and Wales, and Scotland. Each section is further divided into smaller regions, and each region is illustrated with a variety of symbols and icons that represent its railway infrastructure.
The map shows the main railway lines, branch lines, stations, and junctions. It also includes information about the distance between stations, the number of trains per day, and the average speed of the trains.
John Tallis (1817–1876) was a prominent British mapmaker and publisher, renowned for his significant contributions to 19th-century cartography. Born in Southwark, London, Tallis began his career as a map engraver and later established himself as a key figure in the mapmaking industry.
Teaming up with cartographic engraver John Rapkin, the duo formed John Tallis and Company, producing a series of highly acclaimed illustrated atlases during the mid-19th century. Tallis's maps were distinguished by their accuracy and artistic embellishments, featuring intricate illustrations, decorative borders, and vignettes capturing scenes from diverse regions.
Among his notable works is the "Railway map of Great Britain," reflecting the era's rapid expansion of the railway network and serving as a vital resource for travelers and investors alike. Tallis's maps not only provided practical geographic information but also stood out for their visual appeal.
Following Tallis's death in 1876, the company faced financial challenges, leading to the acquisition of certain map and atlas rights by the London Printing and Publishing Company. Today, John Tallis's legacy endures through his influential contributions to the art and science of cartography during a transformative period in British history.
