In 1959, the Geographic Institute in Edinburgh published the remarkable John Bartholomew map of the Arctic Ocean and Greenland. This large, oversized map stands out for its meticulous level of detail, encompassing the entirety of the Arctic Ocean, along with Greenland, Svalbard, Scandinavia, Russia, and Alaska. Notably, it also includes various smaller islands and features, such as the Franz Josef Land archipelago and the North Pole.
Crafted through color-lithography, the map exhibits an abundance of information, showcasing precise coastlines, mountains, rivers, lakes, and glaciers. Additionally, political boundaries and valuable insights into the region's natural resources are featured.
John Bartholomew was a prominent Scottish cartographer and geographer who belonged to the renowned Bartholomew family of mapmakers. He was born on October 23, 1805, in Edinburgh, Scotland, and was the son of John Bartholomew Sr., a cartographer and engraver.
John Bartholomew Jr. followed in his father's footsteps and took over the family business, which was founded in the early 19th century. The Bartholomew family's mapmaking company, John Bartholomew & Son, became one of the leading map publishers in the world.
John Bartholomew Jr. contributed significantly to the cartographic field and made several notable accomplishments during his lifetime. He was responsible for developing and producing various atlases, maps, and globes that gained international recognition for their accuracy and level of detail.
The Bartholomew maps were especially known for their quality and were widely used by explorers, governments, and educational institutions. They covered a wide range of geographical areas, from local maps of Scotland to world atlases.
John Bartholomew's dedication to cartography earned him recognition and awards. He was the geographer royal for Scotland and held various positions within geographical societies and mapmaking organizations.
John Bartholomew Jr. passed away on April 8, 1861, but his legacy continued through his family's mapmaking business, which remained influential in the industry for many decades.
