Issued in 1946 as part of the authoritative Atlas de la France Vinicole by L. Larmat, this map dedicated to Le Beaujolais presents a precise post-war documentation of Burgundy’s southernmost wine district. Created at a moment of national reconstruction, the atlas reflects a scholarly commitment to preserving France’s viticultural identity through disciplined and technical cartography.
The composition delineates the geographic extent of Beaujolais from the Mâconnais boundary in the north to the outskirts of Lyon in the south. Vineyard zones, commune boundaries, roadways, and railway lines are carefully plotted, illustrating both agricultural structure and commercial infrastructure. Particular attention is given to the crus of northern Beaujolais—Moulin-à-Vent, Morgon, Fleurie, Juliénas, Brouilly, Côte de Brouilly, Chiroubles, and Chénas—whose granite-based soils distinguish them from the broader appellation.
Subtle tonal variation suggests elevation and terrain shifts along the undulating hills that define the region’s landscape. The Saône River corridor is clearly identified, emphasizing its historical role in transport and trade. Typography is restrained and methodical, reinforcing the atlas’s educational function for merchants, brokers, and wine professionals.
Unlike decorative tourist maps, this sheet prioritizes structural clarity and terroir classification. It reflects the formalization of appellation boundaries during the early twentieth century and documents Beaujolais at a pivotal stage in its regulatory development.
